We have all seen our fair share of unusual things while we drive. What we aren’t used to is proper road signs throwing us for a loop. There are plenty of crazy signs you may see on a trip across the country. Here are a few of them.

No Hitchhikers
There is a sign that reads “Correctional Facility Area: Do not Pick up Hitchhikers.” Well, this sign is not only unusual, but it’s also highly necessary. It’s one thing to be a Good Samaritan, but it’s another to pick up a guy who should be serving 25-to-life.

No Explosives
“No explosives” is a rule that shouldn’t have to be put on a sign, but one that was anyway. The location of this sign is unknown, but it exists, and you may want to steer clear of any area where you see it.

No Falling Limbs
“Warning: Limbs May Fall” is not exactly what you want to see on your journey through an area, but it’s nice that they’re making it known. Of course, this sign isn’t as bad as the “Falling Rocks” sign you might see elsewhere, but if the limb is big enough, it could be a problem. If your car encounters a big limb, it could affect your auto insurance rates.

Message to Dogs
Vancouver certainly has a sense of humor. In a sign made to encourage dog owners to clean up after their pets, there’s also a message for the pups themselves: “Grrrr, bark, woof. Good dog.” Clearly, this sign is an attempt at being cute. It’s certainly original because you’ll never see a sign like this anywhere else.

No Fun
Santa Cruz is supposed to be a pleasant place to visit. However, one sign outlaws almost everything from pets to driving to playing ball. In reality, these are necessary to outlaw in the area, but putting them on a sign only makes you think of doom and gloom.

Beware of Tanks

You’ve heard of deer, dog and duck crossings, but tanks? Yes, apparently there are some places in the world where a tank will cross your path. Clearly, any collision with the tank means bad news for you and not for the tank, so this sign is strictly for your benefit.

Beware of Your Grandpa
Yes, there is a sign somewhere that reads “Beware of Elderly Crossing.” This sign tops even the tank sign. It’s only right to respect your elders, especially when they’re crossing the street.

These signs might be unusual, but they’re around to help you, so be informed and enjoy the next time you drive past one.

Take a Road Trip

What used to be the all-American family vacation is now a must for young adults looking for total fun. Movies like “Due Date” take it to the extreme, but could there be anything more amusing than the road trip?

From the time you spend talking in the car to seeing the country’s best roadside attractions (think super-sized food statues or brooms that stand on their own,) something makes these trips amazing. Everyone should take a cross-country road trip at least one time in their lives, kids in tow or not.

Notoriously inexpensive (if you do not count the gas) these trips make the perfect choice for families on a budget or those college students looking for a cheap way to get to the beach. To pay for a road trip, rely on discount fuel, coupons, free meals or stays at motels and make sure everyone in the group is pitching in.

Book that European Vacation

Travel Europe. You can plan a cruise around the Mediterranean or plan to backpack your way through the Alps. Tour century-old castles, explore the most delicious French cuisine, and kick back in a vineyard in Italy, all within a few days. Europe’s passenger trains make touring the heart of the continent easier than you thought. See the great cities of London, Barcelona, Rome and Berlin.

Spend at Least a Week at a Beach

While the beaches along the Great Lakes are okay, it is best to head to the ocean beaches along the United States’ coastlines. With more than 12,000 miles of beaches along the coastline, there are definitely options to choose from, ranging from secluded romantic beaches in Hawaii to the most family friendly of locations, like Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head.

From the tip of Florida to the Maine coast, the Eastern Coastline is known for its affordability. Spending a day at the beach does not have to coast you anything. From Washington to the base of California, the western coast offers a peaceful ocean view and deep, blue waters.

Take Life into Your Hands with Roller Coasters

Summer is not complete without a day at an amusement park–or a week if you spend it in Florida’s numerous family attractions. Roller coasters are pushing the line. If you want the fastest in the United States, head to Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, which travels more than 128 miles per hour. For one of the fastest, head to Sandusky, Ohio, for the Top Thrill Dragster, at a height of 430 feet.

Amusement parks entertain in other ways too. The food is as bad for you as it can get, which means it’s fantastic tasting. The shows are a bit corny, but they will make you laugh. You will be sunburned and love every minute of it.

Another great way to save money for you unforgettable summer is simply to cut your expenses. Sign up the kids for free school day care programs and breakfast and lunch. Pocket that extra money for your vacation fund. Turn the air conditioning off and the heat down. Walk to the store for other necessities rather than using the in the car. Go with public television and get rid of the cable for a few months.

Be Creative with Sales Power

Look around your home. There are likely plenty of options for selling things. Start with your old valuables. To have an unforgettable summer, you need to get rid of those things sitting and collecting dust. Recycle that dead car for cash. Some companies will give you money if you just get the car onto the lot. Sell plasma or blood. Pawn other valuables so you can have more spending money.

Get a Second Job

To create the most memorable of summer vacations, you will want to eat well, play hard and pay for gas. A second job may be in the works. Get up early and deliver newspapers. Take on a part-time job doing delivery work. Find out if the local schools need someone to help with painting or janitorial work. Just take on extra hours or new projects at work. Get up the courage to ask your boss for a raise. Summer will be well worth it.

Whether you are traveling for business or for pleasure, if you are flying you are in for a line at the security check-point. It seems that the rules are ever evolving, but in truth, there are several easy steps you can take to help reduce the amount of time you spend once you reach the security guards.

1. Plan ahead – several days before you travel, call the airport and ask what their suggested arrival time now is. It is a good idea to ask about restricted items at this time as well.
2. 3-1-1 rule – One of the biggest changes to airport security is what substances you can take through security and how much of each is acceptable. Follow the 3-1-1 rule to make sure you stay in compliance. This simply means that for liquids, gels, and aerosols, you can carry 3 ounces of each liquid. You must pack them in a one quart clear plastic bag. When you go through screening, that one bag goes in its own bin.
3. Dress appropriately – while there is not a set of rules that states what a passenger can or cannot wear, there are a few common sense apparel choices you can make. Wear slip shoes. Do not wear a belt. Avoid heavy jewelry that will need removal removed. Be sure your pockets are free of extra ‘stuff’ that is separately screened.
4. Declutter your bags – pack your carry-on bag simply and remove all the extra clutter. This will let security guards a clear view of your bag and help move the line along faster. Remember,remove all electronic equipment from bags for separate screened.

It was to be the perfect event: all days had been planned; all activities had been secured. A budget had been balanced and a city had been researched. 1. Using taxis instead of public transportation or walking.

Taxis usually start out at anywhere from $1.00 to as much as $2.50 for the first 1/3 to 1/2 mile, then charge fifty to seventy-five cents for each additional 1/3 to one mile (if you’re lucky). Unless you can negotiate a flat rate with a driver (which might not be possible) your taxi fares are going to mount up fast.

The only way you might be able to negate this is if you are staying at one specific place that has the same taxi drivers hanging around every day, and you will be going to the exact same location (or close to it) every day. Then, you might be able to negotiate something, but you are still going to need to know exactly how much the fare would be and work down from there. It’s better to take public transportation or even walk, if it’s safe, of course.

2. Limiting most meals to fast food.

Contrary to what you might think, this is usually not cheaper than eating regular restaurant meals, even if you only order from the $1 or value menu. The portions on these menus are usually smaller, thus you wind up ordering more than you normally would have.

Also, with many restaurants offering 2 for 1 meals (appetizer, entre, dessert, or appetizer and two entrees, or other combinations), you may actually be able to eat cheaper than at a fast food restaurant and you get better quality food.

3. Flying because you got (or so you thought) a good price on tickets.

Once you’ve figured in taxes, baggage handling fees, and all the other add-ons airports have now, was it really such a bargain? It may have cheaper to drive, even if it means two extra nights’ stay in a hotel because you had to cut the trip in half both going there and returning home.

4. Believing that “packages” would be too restrictive.

You may have passed up a good bargain on packages because you couldn’t choose your hotels, or only had a limited number of days at an attraction, or for other reasons. However, chances are that the packages offered some “perks” that you would have to pay for separately. You can also going with vacation rentals on sites such as HomeAway and a plane ticket can save time and won’t have any weird hidden costs associated with them.

5. Buying every morsel of food and every drop of liquid you drink.

Sure, you’re on vacation and don’t want to cook, but how hard is it to fix a bowl of cereal or some instant oatmeal in your room, and buy snacks at a grocery store and pack them? And, how about buying water bottles and refilling them?

It has a slightly smaller keyboard then most of the other netbooks, which can be awkward to use at first, and it does have very noisy buttons, which are quite annoying at times. It also lacks the ability to upgrade the battery from standard, although it does last quite a while without requiring a charge. Overall, this is a great netbook, with a big screen and huge storage.

HP Mini 2140

The HP is a very stylish laptop. It has an edge-to-edge 10 inch LED widescreen, which can support the highest resolution, and is easy to work on. The keyboard is almost the same as a standard keyboard, with everything placed where you would expect, and it has a very long battery life.

There is also an ExpressCard slot, so you can increase the storage, or transfer documents across devices. The mouse buttons are oddly placed, but this is easy to get used too, so the only real downside is the cost. The HP Mini is more expensive than the other netbooks, but it’s stylish design and functionality could make up for that.

ASUS N10Jc

This is a big netbook, which has plenty of useful features. It was marketed as a corporate netbook, featuring a large, clear widescreen, and it contains a nVidia Geforce 9300M GS graphics processing unit, meaning it has amazing graphics for a netbook.

It also has a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 160gb hard drive and 1gb of RAM. It’s easy to use, and very stylish, mixing black and silver tones to make a very attractive netbook. This is another expensive option, due to the improved system and larger size, but its designed specifically for business use and may be easier to adapt too if you are used to using a fullsize desktop.
These laptops are all capable of using the internet, sending and receiving emails, and creating and editing documents. They are all stylish, portable and much cheaper than buying a laptop for each member of staff. Most of these netbooks are less than a quarter of the price of a proper business laptop! The plain-speaking title of the Blacks and Whites’ Carnival in January harks back to slavery. It’s held to mark the day in which slaves won themselves back in 1607. Annually, on the same day, the town of Pasto, witnesses a cavalcade celebrating sheer happiness.

The devil gets a day too, in January when the town of Riosucio swings colorfully into action with costumes. This celebration is highly symbolic of the progress made to eliminate tension between races in Colombia using traditional dresses and flamboyant feathered head-dresses. The costumes they use are way out of my budget range, but when I decided to throw a Hispanic inspired party at my house in Florida I bought my costume here.

European Film Festival

Celebrating the accomplishments of other countries? We don’t do that here in the U.S.! In April, movie-makers converge for the Eurocine Film Festival and travel from city to city. Some years, this festival will last up to 11 days in their capital of Bogota and 4 – 6 days in other destinations. What a party!

Power of Music

There is nothing staid about Latino folk music. Among many folk festivals, the one at Valledupar in late April explodes for five days, with parades and parties galore. Summer bursts on the scene with its heady mix. In July, Neiva hosts both, a folklore festival and Bambuco contest, an event to be savored, for the stunning costumes and the skill involved in this mesmeric dance. Bogota hosts the Rock in the Park Festival in June, while the same city’s Theatre District hosts an action-packed season from June until December.

Did you process that? June til December! That’s 6 months of planned celebrations by Bogota’s Theatre District.

Blistering August swings into action with the Bogota carnival, coinciding with Salsa in the Park. Then in November, gorgeous girls are in the spotlight at the National Beauty Pageant, a highlight of the Cartagena Independence Day Festivities. Don’t miss the Colombian Andean Music Festival in Bucaramanga, Santander, also in November. The year ends fittingly with light and lantern celebrations, seasonal song and Christmas feasting. In true Hispanic tradition, embracing the philosophy of living in the moment, you are invited simply to enjoy.

Throughout the calendar year, from the folk festivals to the fabulous pageant of summer with its different music genres to celebration of Christmas, Hispanics take every opportunity to celebrate life. These festivals are good examples of the Hispanic culture as a whole — it’s about glorifying their existence, living in the moment, and being joyful. So when traveling to such destinations, it is best to get yourself into that frame of mind and avoid an individualistic point of view.

Do your research. While traveling blind may be fun for some, most find being clueless in a foreign territory frustrating and even frightening. Study a map before you leave. Have a basic idea of the area’s layout and the location of points of interest. Bring the map on your trip.

Learn a little of the language.  If you are traveling abroad, learn some key words and phrases in that country’s language. Ideally, you want to know enough of the language to cover the necessities (finding the bathroom, ordering food, asking for directions) and the niceties (saying please and thank you).

Realize that everything will take at least twice as you think. While you can make grand plans about how to spend every last minute of your vacation, remember to factor in the time it takes to travel in between destinations. Put only one or two big activities on your daily agenda, and allow the other times to be filled by serendipity.

Eat regularly and carry snacks.  The fast way to ensure an unpleasant vacation is to neglect nurturing your body with nutrients. While eating regularly may not always be an option, make sure you’re carrying something to tide you over until your next real meal.

Bring a book or other down-time activity. For those times when traveling isn’t as relaxing or as exciting as you’d hoped (like waiting at the airport), it’s nice to have something else to take your mind away.

Remember, traveling is supposed to be an escape from the stresses of your everyday life. With these suggestions, hopefully you won’t ever again want to escape your escape!

Find ways to encapsulate these colorful acquaintances succinctly but accurately.

The Transformative Moments
Traveling is the perfect time to take yourself out of your own element and see what the world (and you yourself) is made of. Record curiosities of culture differences, or the epiphanies big or small that you had along the way about the world or about yourself.

Include Pictures!
Pictures are worth a thousand words, so be sure to take pictures of the people who you meet and the important sights that you see along the way. It will not only help to jog your own memory but make the experience more colorful for the people back home.

Put Down the Pen!
Most importantly, be sure that your writing doesn’t get in the way of your traveling. The experiences are the reason that you are traveling in the first place; recording those experiences is secondary. Don’t be so concerned about writing that you forget to experience your journey. If you need to, make notes about what happened, and record the extended explanation later. How else are you planning to spend all those hours in the airport on your return?

When It’s Written, Publish!
Once you’ve finished, consider self-publishing your travel journal, and sharing the experience with friends and families. It could make a great a gift, or a good excuse to make them listen in detail to your trip.

Take more than one.
Most photographers will tell you that they take 50 bad pictures for every exceptional one. While you may not need to take quite that many, do think about taking three or four more than you might usually. Odds are you won’t have another chance to take a picture like this for a long while to come.

Vary your angle.
Sometimes a slightly different perspective can make for an amazing picture. Try taking pictures low to the ground looking up, from high up looking down, along walls wherever seems like it might be interesting.

Look for the unusual.  Traveling allows us to open our eyes to the differences we encounter in the world, whether it be in the next town or the next continent. Take pictures of little details that make you smile or surprised you.

Take pictures of the people. Assuming that there are no cultural taboos about taking pictures, the people you meet are a large part of what you will remember about your trip. Be sure to check that they are okay with having their picture taken before you do so. Otherwise, take candid shots, and focus on the smiles.

Bring extra film or memory cards.
It’s hard to take memorable pictures if you run out of film or space on your memory card. Be sure you pack twice as many as you think you may want, just in case.

Once you return home, make an album or online collection of your pictures, and share them!

Be sure you move around when traveling.
While you’re in transit, you can often spend several hours sitting. Be sure to stand up, stretch, and walk around every hour or so to keep your limbs, well, limber.

Carry snacks and not junk food.
Getting regular meals while traveling can be nearly impossible at times, so make sure you have snacks on hand for those times when the next chance for dinner is unfortunately hours away. Stay away from junk food. Carry instead things like dried fruit, trail mix, jerky, and lots of water.

Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer after using public transportation.
Public transportation is eye-opening part of traveling, but it can be a good way to catch colds, too. Try to avoid touching your eyes or face while using or after departing from subways, trains, or buses. When you have a chance, wash your hands with soap, or merely carry your own hand sanitizer to simplify matters.

Carry health information and medication with you.
Make sure you pack twice the amount of medicine that you will need for your trip (and keep half of that in your carry-on in case your other bags happen to be lost). Wear a medic alert bracelet if you need one, or have some other means of identifying any medical conditions that you may have.

Know your options.
Before you travel, do a little research about what options you have should you get sick. What kind of facilities are available, and how much do they cost?

Located on the National Mall next door to the Air and Space Museum, NMAI has an entirely different feel. See Native American objects from all over the western hemisphere, and listen to Native stories as them themselves tell them.

National Museum of American History
You can get a taste of America in all its forms in this museum. See the Star-Spangled Banner, learn about transportation throughout history, wars in America’s past, or visit pop culture must-sees like Dorothy’s red ruby slippers or Kermit the Frog.

This museum is a must-see in DC. It covers the history of espionage, and offers a couple of other programs to give you a taste of what it’s like to be a spy yourself.

National Gallery of Art
For those people looking for the classic museum experience, a visit to the National Gallery’s large, quiet, and truly beautiful galleries is a necessity. Be sure to use the underground passage between the two buildings; the moving walkway is akin to being in Star Trek.

A Makeover of the Airstream Travel Trailer

In an interesting talk on TED, Christopher C. Deam describes how he came to restyle the interior of an old airstream trailer in modern fashion. Wilson Art asked him for a new design that would convey a fresh new look. He first realized that the current Airstream’s older interior look that did not match the exterior of the vehicle. His goal was to modernize the interior to be more in alignment of what the exterior was trying to convey – speed and sleekness, a “high-tech futuristic pod.” Deam thought about travel and escape in a different way, and built a prototype for Airstream called the “Bambi 16″ that provided a different take on Airstream’s “mountain cabin” interior look. Deam modernized the entire interior of the Airstream by stripping out all the vinyl, hardware and trim, then smoothing out the interior. Because of the continuous form of the trailer, there was no logical place to stop and start – it is a compound curved interior. He came up with a series of second skins that direct the eye to perceive the geometry in a different way.

Due to Americans’ love of travel, the Airstream travel trailer is as popular as ever. Even though campers are the most expensive option (when it comes to buying and the amount of gas it consumes), motorhomes allow travelers to tour the country in a relatively convenient fashion. It’s even become somewhat of a cult phenomenon among retirees and adventurers, with motorhome clubs popping up all over the country.

Deam, a designer, is fascinated with clean clines and modern materials. His designs are clear and thoughtful, anchored in old-fashioned craftsmanship. Deam has an architectural practice and his other design work includes designing for Target, Herman Miller, and other manufacturers.

Many things should be kept in mind while air travelling. You have to pack the relevant stuff according the region of the world where you are going. If you are moving on to a hot place, you should of course pack some light clothes and stuff that suits such area. But if you are flying towards north, you should be fully aware that you may have to face many snow storms there. Your packing should be according to that. Visit Seattle Center
Here you can wander through the poetry garden, see a play or ballet, or pop into a museum. The Pacific Science Center has exhibits for the dinosaurs, butterflies, and astronomy fans, while the Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum caters to a slightly different set of interests. Oh, and while you at the Seattle Center, make sure you take a ride up to the top of the Space Needle, too.

Finding somewhere to stay while you are on holiday can be one of the most expensive financial costs of the whole trip. Stay with Family, Friends, or Friends of Friends
Before you hit the Big Apple, try to find family, friends, or friends of friends with a couch or even a floor that you can crash on for a night. If you dig deep enough, chances are you can find at least one person who wouldn’t mind having a guest for one night (especially if you offer to return the favor later on).

Study the Subway Map
Taking the subway will be much cheaper than taking taxis, so be sure you can find your way around. Consider downloading the map onto your phone or iPod if possible.

Save Money on Entertainment, But Not Too Much
Many of the best things to see and do in New York are free, but be sure to treat yourself to at least one more pricey outing. Go to one of the world-class museums, a Broadway show, a game, or just take in some big-city shopping.

The Paradox of Choice

In a thoughtful talk on TED, psychologist Barry Schwartz speaks about individual freedom, and the psychology of choice. This freedom of choice appears to be the central tenet of western society, seemingly the way towards happiness.

What enables choice is the material affluence of western societies. Schwartz questions this belief, saying that the endless amount of choices we have as consumers has not in fact made us happier or freer, but more dissatisfied. People are preoccupied with the plethora of options they have in life, from marriage and having children to career choices to purchasing options. This incredible freedom of choice available to us means we have to make decisions “again and again and again”. Everything in lIfe has become a matter of choice. Is this good news or bad news?

Choice has negative effects on people. With so many options, it causes paralysis – with so many choices, it’s too hard to make a decision. It’s easier to put off decisions rather than making them. Even if we manage to overcome paralysis and make a choice, we end up less satisfied than we would be if we had fewer options to choose from – it’s too easy to imagine that we could have made a better choice than we did (even if it was a good decision). This is called opportunity costs. The way we value things depends on comparison. Escalation of expectations also causes discontentment – with so many available options, our expectations go up accordingly, causing less satisfaction. The secret to happiness is low expectations. With so many choices, there is no excuse for failure – people blame themselves and feel worse. Clinical depression and suicide has gone up.

Conclusion: some choice is better than no choice, but it does not follow that more choice is even better. It is not true that more choices improve our well being. Excess choice actually hurt us, plagues us, make us worse off than we would be. It is the recipe for misery.

The Designer

Paul Moller, president and CEO of Moller International, talks about the future of transportation and outlines his version of the Skycar on TED (the best of Technology, Entertainment, and Design). While he was a professor at UC Davis, Moller developed the Aeuronautical Engineering program. He has been working on the design for vertical takeoff and landing personal vehicles since the 1960s. Now, with a team of engineers, Moller is working on his dream: the future of transportation that will transform the way we look at travel.

Skycar Technology

The technology to build skycars is definitely available today, but the infrastructure isn’t quite prepared to allow for the ‘highway in the sky’. This sky highway has actually been in preparation for over a decade (GPS, for instance) but is still being developed enough to accommodate personal aircraft. Skycars can travel at over 300 miles per hour. Moller’s skycar, the Moller Skycar, is a combination jet and car. It is designed to take off like a helicopter (vertical take off vehicle) and is powered electrically. In this model, you are a passenger, not the pilot. The vehicle is a controlled environment. Vertical take off vehicles need artificial stabilization and require a lot of power in a relatively small package. A revised rotary engine generates 175 horsepower per cubic foot. Two parachutes are included in the design for the case of emergencies. Moller is also working on a volantor, a low-flying hovering car that could go into production in the next couple years.

1. Think about where you are going, and what you might encounter there. What are the people like in the city you will be visiting? Are they serious business people who will want you to walk quickly or move out of the way, especially during rush hour? Or are they laidback country-types who might be offended if you moved too quickly and did not stop to talk awhile? Try to know a little about the culture you may encounter.

2. Don’t wear your camera around your neck. Unless it’s a large, professional-looking camera, it’s the number one giveaway that you’re not from around here.

3. Pack both comfortable clothes and shoes and something a little fancier. Try not to wear only your t-shirts, baseball caps, and tennis shoes for the entirety of your trip. While comfortable attire is essential, look for clothes a little more discrete if you want to blend in.

4. When in doubt about how to act, watch the locals, and do what they do. If you don’t know where to stand when you’re taking public transit, for example, watch the people who look bored. Chances are they do this every day, and know the rules as well as they know the routes. They’ll be the ones to show you on which side of the escalator to stand if you only look.

There’s no shame in being a tourist, but there is some fun in trying to blend in. Good luck on your next trip!

Set in high in the desert mountains of New Mexico, Santa Fe is a stunning vacation spot with more than enough to tempt any traveler to its heights. Here are a few suggestions of ways to spend your time in the jewel of the Land of Enchantment.

Pop into a Few Art Galleries
Santa Fe has a thriving collection of art galleries, from Native arts and crafts to the Chuck Jones Gallery, filled with such items as Looney Tunes memorabilia, Peanuts arts, and Dr. Seuss creations. The galleries are as much fun as museums, and don’t cost anything to browse.

Walk the Plaza
In downtown Santa Fe you can spend many enjoyable hours in the Plaza, an open area often used for performances and art and craft fairs. Many shops line the Plaza, and you can even buy authentic artwork and crafts from Native Americans who display their wares in front of the Palace of the Governors just across the street.

Hit Up the Opera
The Santa Fe Opera puts on a couple of stunning shows each summer. The beautiful music, the elaborate costumes, and the labyrinth sets are awesome, as is the opportunity to listen to opera in the open desert air under a sky full of stars.

Go on a Hike
There are many trails near Santa Fe, and many good hikes a short drive away, but remember: bring lots of water, tell someone where you’re going to be, and pace yourself  you may find the extra elevation to be taxing even if you’re in the best of shape.

Catch a Sunset
Above all, be sure to catch a sunset or two while you’re in Santa Fe. The light in Santa Fe is unlike the light anywhere else, and explains why so many artists have made pilgrimages or come to live in the city over the years. Every night is another stunning sunset, so you’ll have a couple of chances to get that perfect picture of the radiant sky.

Getting tired while traveling is a nuisance for many people. The extended periods of sitting still and waiting to get places can actually take a lot out of you. Whether you are traveling to stay in relaxing Portland apartments or going on a round-the-world trip, you need to be able to minimize how much you get tired while travelling. There are a few things you can do to help fight travel fatigue.

The first step is to plan your trip carefully. By doing this you can make sure you avoid any unnecessary stop overs or long delays between flights, which are sure to drain your energy. This is fairly easy to do if you are traveling by plane or by boat, but if you are driving somewhere you need to make yourself stop and take a rest.

You also need to watch what you eat while traveling. The temptation can be to simply grab quick and easy fast food for your journey, but unfortunately this will add to your tiredness as your body will be dealing with constant sugar highs and lows. Eating a good supply of fresh fruit and even vegetables will help keep your mind relaxed and your body healthy.

Washington State is normally not seen as a hotbed of ancient artifacts. In the US, much of that is preserved in the Four Corners States and scattered around the mound builders of the Mississippi River Valley. The mound builders sites tend to date from 3000 BCE to around the 16th century CE. That should not leave the unique artifacts of Washington State ignored, especially the pictographs at Indian Painted Rocks west of Yakima. A couple miles west on Highway 12, you can find 80 pictographs, all on display. Neither local tribes nor archaeologists can date them. They are indeed an enigma.  A little ways north, lay Vantage, WA and Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park. Not only is this one of the most unique fossil forests in the world, there is a collection of Native American petroglyphs that were rescued before the original area was submerged under the Columbia River during the building of one of the dams there.  Guided tours are available at the Horsethief Lake area of the Columbia River as well. This site is right across the river from the Dalles, Oregon. The artifacts are from the biggest ancient fishing grounds along the Columbia.
Caches of artifacts can be found at an ancient whaling village in Ozette. This site is about twelve miles south of Neah Bay on the Pacific Ocean side of the Olympic Peninsula. You can view some of the artifacts at the Makah Cultural and Research Center. They offer free guided tours as well and have created full scale replicas of long houses as well as whaling and fishing canoes. Probably the most important site in Washington State is the Marmes Rock Shelter at Palouse Falls. Close to Palouse Falls State Park, Geologists uncovered the “Marmes Man”, thought to be around 10,000 years old. It is one of the most ancient human remains ever found in North America. By the way, Palouse Falls is worth a look too as it drops nearly 200 feet to a natural basin. The falls and the petrified forest are probably the most ancient of all!

Traveling can be a lot of fun, but you’ll want to be properly prepared for it. If you’re not ready or your vehicle isn’t prepared the right way, you might end up with a car problem far from home – which is obviously something you want to avoid. There’s no absolute guarantee that you won’t have a car problem anyway, because any vehicle can break down, but having your car checked out before you travel is a great way to prevent small problems from becoming big ones. It can make you feel safer, especially if you’re traveling alone or if you’re traveling with small children.

The kind of insurance that you have for your car will matter, too. You want to make sure that you’re well-covered, and anyone who drives your car on the trip should be covered under your policy, as well. You can get a quote or policy from 21st car insurance and make sure that you have what you need to be covered in the event of an accident. It not only protects you and your passengers, but it protects other people on the road with you.

Checking out your car mechanically and making sure your insurance is good aren’t the only things you can do for your trip. You may also want to look at making sure you’re personally ready for the trip. Take snacks and water with you, games for the kids, and music or books on CD to pass the time, especially if it’s a long drive. If you’re traveling during bad weather, especially in the winter, you should also have flares, a full tank of gas, and a first aid kit. Make sure someone knows where you’re going and what time you should arrive. Check in with that person when you get there, so they’ll know to call authorities if they don’t hear from you.

Paradise Inn sits at the base of a half-million year old volcano. Mount Rainier is a primary photographic icon on the Seattle skyline, making the entire picture, literally and metaphorically hard to believe. People on the east coast of the United States have been known to demand first hand photos of this mountain, unable to believe it looks the way it does in published Seattle photo. It’s real.
Inside Rainier National Park, the drive to 5,400 foot elevation Paradise lodge is a narrow, winding and steep drive . . . and breathtaking. Part way up, you will drive over a narrow rock bridge that crosses the base of Nisqually Glacier. Seeing that, you’ll have a taste of what’s to come.
Get there early in the day, especially during tourist season. The parking lot fills fast. Play around at the visitor’s center and lodge, then get your hiking boots on and hit a rather steep set of trails. Take either Nisqually Vista Trail that overlooks the massive glacier and moraines or Skyline Trail that takes a half-mile circle around meadows. The Indian paintbrush interspersed with daisies, and lupins is a shock to the eyes.
If you are an EXPERIENCED climber, you can check in at Paradise and do the five mile long, one mile elevation gain hike up Muir Snowfield to the base camp for summiting Rainier.  Muir is actually a shallow glacier that opens small crevasses most summers. It’s not a day-hike. Once at the base camp, the mountain can create its own severe storms even in August with winds high enough to blow you over and take your tent down. If you are experienced, the event will give you stories to tell your children for the rest of your life, including tell them that you saw the curvature of the earth at 10,090 feet.
For the faint of heart, the lodge provides food, lodging and a gift shop. The visitor’s center is a great way to see the mountain without actually touching it. At least take the lower trails. Why go there and not touch the mountain?

If you’re a history nut and you’re traveling the Seattle area, take the time to hop the Mukilteo Ferry to Whidbey Island. Get a map. The ferry docks at Clinton. Drive 525, the main north-south highway, up the island. You will drive past Freeland and Greenbank. It’s a beautiful drive of evergreen forest and water. Go the speed limit. Absorb what you see. Take a left at Coupeville –highway twenty. This will take you to the 19th century Fort Casey. Gun turrets, bunkers, artillery mounds, and tunnels are everywhere. The fort was built with two other forts, Flagler and Worden, in a triangle to protect the entrance to the Puget Sound. There is a history lesson on a massive board for the visitor with pictures and maps. Take flashlights so you can get through all the interesting catacombs where soldiers worked and where ammo loading was accomplished. The concrete is so old that the lime is leeching from the walls.
Two ten-inch sea-coast guns that are currently mounted are not the original. They were imported from Fort Wint on Subic Bay and re-set in the turrets. These cannons are covered with shrapnel scars from WWII. It has an effect on the mind to see this. It will silence you.
Walk the grounds completely seeing all the smaller turrets and the lighthouse which is open to the public. The walk to the top of the lighthouse is a tiny and very steep spiral staircase. Watch your step . . . and your head! If you are in for a hike, there are further turrets north up a small path.
You can stay there all day. There is an enormous parade ground in front where visitors set up picnics and play Frisbee. So make a full day of the trip.
Once you have done all you came to do, stand back and stare at the entire facility in one view and try to imagine what it was like one hundred years ago. Just let the scene do it to you. Don’t try. You will walk away a slightly different person.

Orcas Island offers a surprising about of diversity as San Juan Islands go. Mount Constitution sits at 2409 feet. It’s no match for the Olympic and Cascade ranges, but it’s the tallest thing on the islands. It also offers something the major ranges do not: a 12th century replica fortress! While there you will also be offered another Orcas original: a 360 degree view of the surrounding area, mountain ranges included, with bald eagles to top it off. The bald eagle is prevalent in this part of the country. It is not abnormal to see a pair floating just about anywhere, including over the top of a local grocery store or elementary school. You will find large amounts of cyclists on two islands. Neighboring Lopez Island is the flat run for the biker who doesn’t want to work too hard. Orcas is for the more devoted cyclist and offers Moran State Park as the pay off. This 5000 acre reserve is covered with biking and hiking trails. There are several lakes for fishing, swimming and non-motorized boating. Kayaking is hugely popular in this part of the country. Oh yes, waterfalls—several of those. And of course there is the camp ground.
Obstruction Pass Park offers camping as well. It’s small, with only eleven camp sites. It also has limited boat mooring. If you do boat to Orcas and are a fanatic about work while you play, Lieber Haven Resort has WiFi access. Orcas is known widely by locals for the camping and cycling. But it is also known for its three organized camps: Camp Orkila, Four Winds Westward Ho, and Camp Indralaya. I don’t know about you, but I really love the holiday season. I love the smells, the sounds, and the wonderful feeling in the air that surrounds this time of the year. ●      Avocado and Shrimp Salad. Avocados and shrimp are easy to stow away, and you can quickly whip up a salad with olive oil, vinegar, chili sauce, garlic, ground pepper, dill, and chives. Add everything to the empty avocado shells for a fantastic afternoon snack on deck.

●      Rye Bread Boat Dip. In a hollowed loaf of rye bread, add some chopped or corned beef into a mixture of sour cream, salad dressing, dill weed, minced onion, parsley, and Beau Monde seasoning to settle your appetite.

These are just a handful of ideas for boat snacks. You can find many recipes or come up with your own with simple foods. Think of it as a road trip in your boat, and get these land to sea transportation snacks ready to go. Many of them are light on storage needs and you can quickly fetch or devise both great classic and unique snacks when you’re out on the water.

The FAA has recently released a study that shows that delayed flights can cost a traveler hundreds of dollars in unexpected costs. The results of this study shows exactlly what most travelers already knew, that delayed flights can cost the traveler a lot of money.

The FAA further explains that the study’s findings show that expenses can come in a number a ways. Here are the three main ways that delayed flights can cost a traveler more money.

1. Food Expenses. Many travelers pick flights that are close together so that they don’t have to eat in between flights. Most restaurants in an airport offer food at an inflated price because of the captive audience that they have. A delayed flight can cause travelers to have to go look for places to eat and finally cave in and get something to eat at these rather pricey restaurants.

2. Hotel Stays. If a flight is delayed for a prolonged period of time, a traveler might opt to stay in a nearby hotel if they do not want to camp out on the benches of the airport. Even if logistics are a little bit more difficult in your case, that shouldn’t stop you. First, decide where you’d like to go and how you’re going to get there. If you can fly or drive without assistance, things will be easier. If you can’t, talk to the company that you’re considering flying with, or the bus or train company if you’re traveling that way. Make sure that they can accommodate you, and ask about additional costs and other factors. Make sure you cover all bases, including any medications or treatments you’ll need, food, the bathroom, and any other issues where you may have a special need.

If you see that you’re going to be late, call your hotel and let them know. They’ll usually hold your room longer if they know that you’re coming, and that weather is a factor in why you haven’t arrived yet. You may also be able to call and cancel if you’re not going to be able to get there at all, so you won’t be paying for a room you’re not using.

Mardi Gras is the American equivalent to Carnival celebrations which occur in other locations throughout the world. Mobile’s Mardi Gras first began back in 1703, a full fifteen years before New Orleans began their Mardi Gras celebrations. Mardi Gras was originally started as a Catholic tradition as a way to celebrate until the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Weeks prior to Lent, there are public parades, private parties, Mardi Gras balls and other activites heralding the season. Everything comes to a culmination on Fat Tuesday at midnight just before Ash Wednesday.

Mobile is located just off the Alabama Gulf Coast. It is in the southern portion of the state and a fun city to visit any time of year. Located along Mobile Bay, the community has a rich history. If you decide to attend Mardi Gras, be sure to plan in advance. The weekend leading into Fat Tuesday is the best time to visit the city when you will be able to participate in the most public accessible activities. Parade routes are well publicized in advance and it is advised you arrive early to get a good spot with high visibility. This way you have a good view of the floats and other parade participants and also better your chances to catch some Mardi Gras throws, such as Moon Pies, beads and doubloons, to commemorate your experience.

Start your day off right. If you are staying at a hotel that offers a continental style breakfast, like many do, stay away from the sugary high calorie pastries and instead opt for whole grain cereals served with skim or low fat milk and fresh fruit. When literally on the road, while traveling by car or plane, pack healthy snacks before you leave home. Carry bottled water in a cooler. Bring along guilt-free snacks like pretzels, dried fruits, fresh fruits, string cheese, nuts and whole grain crackers make other good choices. Frozen yogurts can provide a nice sweet treat when you get a craving. Keeping it healthy keeps your energy levels high which helps you feel your best while on the go, allowing you to get more out of your travels.

When traveling abroad, such as to villas in Spain, there’s no need to be afraid for your safety. However, there are some easy tips to ensure that you and your valuables remain safe:

1) Don’t make yourself look like a tourist: There’s nothing more obvious to a scam artist than a tourist. They have the confused look like they don’t know where they’re going, the fanny pack and a map.

In order to keep your own in a foreign place, fake it until you make it. Locals will know that you’re from out of town, but they don’t need to know that you’re disoriented.

2) Keep your valuables hidden: This is simple. Don’t walk around with your camera around your neck, and don’t keep your wallet in your back pocket.

4) Register your travel: It’s very important that the government and your family know where you’re going to be in the world, in the event of an emergency. Just register with the state department so you can be notified of a crisis.

While most hotels offer irons, if not in the rooms, available to be checked out from the front desk, who wants to spend their vacation time ironing? Most of us don’t want to iron even when at our own homes. Here’s a solution. If you pack carefully, you might not ever have to hold an iron in hand your entire trip. Try this method and see if it works for you.

First things first, don’t overpack. The tendency to cram in everything but the kitchen sink into your bag is one of the main reasons everything ends up wrinkled and squashed by the time you arrive. Don’t just toss everything in and hope for the best. Use simple techniques to better your odds at having clothes look great.

Fold clothing carefully. In fact, if wanting to avoid wrinkles is your ultimate goal, you are likely better off rolling your clothing. While this might sound odd, it works. Rolling doesn’t crease clothings so there are no corners and lines pressed into clothing during travel. As an added bonus, rolling allows for much more space in your suitcase so you can pack more, or have more space to bring home new purchases.

Be sure to use the right luggage. If you are bringing mostly work-oriented clothing like suits or dresses, carry a bag that allows you to hang these garments. Be sure to pack heavy items on the bottom, beneath clothing or in a separate bag whenever possible.

If you have ever been on a cruise before, you have probably noticed a few things about how they usually go. Of course, there’s a spa and fitness center. There’s no need to miss pumping iron and doing a few miles on the treadmill. But the Oasis takes it a step further, with on board surfing simulators, two rock walls, and an entire water park. Who’d want to leave this ship?

Orlando is mecca of family-friendly entertainment. There is so much to see and do here, your biggest challenge will undoubtedly be deciding where to draw the line, depending on how much time you have. Just about every corner is bustling with activity and attractions in this tourism-driven city.

If you want a reprieve from the traditional tourist attractions, head downtown to the heart of Orlando. The downtown area is only a fifteen minute drive from the outlying Kissimmee area which most are familiar with thanks to Disney. Here you will find Lake Eola and is surrounding neighborhood, Thornton Park, which features charming restaurants and shops and a lovely places to take a scenic, relaxing stroll. If you are so inclined, there are even swan boats you can rent and paddle around the lake.

Take a drive to Winter Park. Just a few minutes outside of downtown Orlando sits Winter park, a posh, upscale community that houses gorgeous homes, trendy boutiques and delicious dining experiences. It’s a great place to walk around, people watch and shop for some unique gifts.

Head over to the Merritt Island area, just a short Interstate drive away. Within an hour you are at the Atlantic coast, which is home to Cape Canaveral’s Kennedy Space Center. Here you can tour the museum and learn all about NASA and space travel. If you time your trip just right, you may get to observe a rocket launch.

While in this region, check out the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Located on a barrier island that the Kennedy Space Center used as a buffer zone for launches, the island is now home to wildlife galore, including sea cows, which show up in the waters during spring months.

A visit to the beautiful city of Rome can be overwhelming and intimidating. With so much to see, do, and experience, it can be hard to take it all in. Taking a vacation is supposed to be a way to relax and get away from it all. When we want to enjoy some down time and forget our worries, we opt to take a trip and enjoy some stress free time. One of the best times to head to wine country is during the grape harvest season. This is the most exciting time of year at the wineries. If you are hoping to take it all in and see as much as possible during your stay, the best area to head is directly to Napa Valley. This area features the most wineries per capita and allows you to see a large variety of varietals in a short time.

The harvest season begins in mid-September and goes through October. The season is known as the “crush” as this is the time the grapes are picked, sorted, crushed and then fermented.  The two cities have been competing with each other for centuries.  Funnily enough they compete in similar categories – history, visitor-friendly, and beauty.

 Now London seems to have topped the list, as the friendliest European capital.  A new study by the Paris-lle de France Regional Tourism Committee on all the European capitals, places London in the first place.

The report brushes aside the popular perceptions on Gallic cuisine, the stylish cafes on the pavements and the iconic Champs Elysees.  Despite all these obvious charms, French tourism officials concede that London has outperformed the French capital. 

So what is London boasting about?  Most visitors have said that London’s cuisine and taxis are rated the best.  The other hotspots which tourists ticked off were the Westminster Abbey and Trafalgar Square. 

An important question that the report is clear about is the cost.  Which city is more expensive?  Will you need a title loan to fund a trip to either London or Paris?

 The report titled ‘Twenty Four Hours In A Tourist Capital’ gave London 82 points out of 100 for the welcome accorded to tourists.  Paris, the city which tops the list of the most popular city for tourism arrivals came second along with Amsterdam with 79 points.

The Towers of Notre Dame should be next your list of things to see and do in Paris and to make it even better, it is free to see. This Gothic cathedral was initially constructed around 1200. Additions were made until all was complete by around 1300. It is free to tour, unless you want to climb the towers.

Les Invalides is yet another hugely popular and unique attraction. Here lies the tomb of Napoleon in the Musee de L’Armee at Les Invalides. There is also a history of the French Army. Les Invalides itself used to be a military hospital for wounded soldiers. It is an impressive piece of French classical architecture. The building was commissioned by Louis the 14th and is quite an example of grandeur with all its marble and gold capped crown.

If you make it to just these five attractions, you will have seen the heart and soul of Paris.

There are websites devoted to getting your the most for your money when it comes to booking a flight. Scour these sites and use the tools available to you. Check alternate times and dates and of course airlines or airports, if you have more than one convenient to you to fly out of. Often by driving an extra 30 minutes down the road you can save hundreds of dollars by flying out of an alternate secondary airport. If it’s convenient, consider it.

If you are contacting the airlines directly, never accept the first quoted fare. Always compare alternate times and different days of the week, if you have flexibility. Often by flying out a day earlier or later, you can save a significant amount. The more flexible you are with your travel plans, the easier it is to save money. If you can travel mid-week, you will likely find the best rates, as this is an off-peak time for the airlines and as a result, rates are reduced to encourage travel.

Try alternate routes for greater savings. Rather than fly direct, or to the most obvious connection city, look for routes that might go to off-the-beaten path hubs, but add up to savings for you. By adding on just a little travel time, you can reduce your airfare which is like earning money for your traveling.

Travel with just a carry-on to save both time and money. Checked bags are now charged a fee on most major airlines. The cost for the first bag is usually around $25 with additional bags costing more. Save money by packing light.

The Lakes of Killarney located in County Kerry provide one of the most scenic vistas throughout Europe. Here three breath-taking lakes are surrounded by mountains just outside of Killarney. There are lots of tiny islands dotting the lakes and again yet another castle to visit along the shore.

The Dingle Peninsula and the Blasket Islands feature a historic park which commemorates the unique history of this beautiful region. According to the Travel Industry Association, 29 million Americans take their pets on vacation annually. Seventy-five percent of that travel is by car, which can be stressful for the pet, especially if your dog or cat isn’t used to car travel. What can you do to make traveling less stressful for both your pet and yourself? Here are some tips.

Car Travel Tips

If your pet simply cannot withstand the rigors of traveling arising from temperament, illness, or injury, the best thing you can do for him is to let him stay behind rather then putting him through the stress of travel. Speak with your veterinarian to find a highly reliable pet sitter or pet boarding facility.

If your pet is able to travel by car, make sure your dog or cat will be comfortable in the vehicle. Bring the pet’s favorite bed, blanket, toys, etc. Provide enough drinking water and an appropriate travel container to dispense the water. Have enough food for the duration of the journey so you won’t be relying upon food you buy along the way. Your pet should wear a collar and ID tag at all times. If possible, your pet should also be microchipped with imbedded identification data (this is an easy, painless outpatient procedure that can be done by your vet). Carry proof of rabies vaccination as well as a current health certificate, along with a printed photo of your pet for identification purposes.

When booking accommodations, ensure that wherever you stay allows pets. This applies to hotels, motels, campgrounds, parks, and staying with others. Do not assume that your pet will be welcome – find out in advance. If you leave your pet in your hotel room, put the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door and let the front desk know that your pet is alone in the room. A portable kennel is helpful in this situation to keep the room from damage. You may want to consider a vacation rental – many allow pets, while hotels generally do not.

This was the age of Constantine the Great, Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini, and Botticelli. Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy in 1871, and in 1946 that of the Italian Republic.

Today, the city of Rome is a cosmopolitan place, bustling with the activity and the enthusiasm of 2.7 million residents in addition to the ever-ubiquitous tourists. Situated on the Tiber River, Rome is the most popular tourist destination in Italy, the third most visited city in Europe, and the 11th most visited city in the world. Rome’s economy is predominantly based on government operations and tourism. Among other things, Rome produces printed materials, high fashion, pharmaceuticals, and metal products.

Rome’s influence on western civilization is well established. The city is recognized as a center of education and the arts, with global influence in culture, politics, literature, music, fashion, film, media, and cuisine. It is the world’s 35th richest city in purchasing power, and the 18th most expensive city in the world.

Since 1929, Rome has been the site of the Vatican, the Catholic Church’s epicenter. Vatican City, a walled enclave, is an independent state with its own currency. It is the smallest country in the world based on an area of 3.2 km by .44 square kilometers, and a population of 900 citizens. This is where the Pope and the Holy See live. The Pope is protected by the Swiss Guard in addition to police force services. St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, two of the world’s marvels, are both located inside Vatican City.

Rome for Tourists

The best approach to seeing the city is by foot. Public transport in Rome (as in most of Europe) is easy and efficient, but whenever possible take in the sights on foot so you can truly experience the essence of this wondrous place, finding hidden gems tucked away in unexpected places. Plan to visit in the spring or autumn when the weather is temperate – warm but not hot. The summers can get oppressive, while winters tend to be chilly.

Sights in Rome – Part 1

Among the world’s 50 top tourist destinations, the first place you must visit is the famous Roman Colosseum. Built in 80 AD, it was the largest amphitheater during the Roman Empire, with seating capacity of over 50 thousand. Its impressive construction took all of the engineering skill and technology available in that day. The Colosseum was built in order to entertain the masses with brutal and barbaric events, including mock sea battles, beast on beast combat to the death, people fighting animals to the death, and human to human combat using slaves. Gladiators were specially trained to fight each other to the death. Every year, four million tourists visit the Colosseum.

In addition to the Colosseum, your admission ticket includes entry into the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The Roman Forum was originally a marsh that was later turned into a marketplace and civic center. It was then expanded to include law courts, a senate house, and temples. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Forum was forgotten. Partially buried or destroyed, all that remains of some temples are stone blocks and columns, but you’ll get an idea of what life was like thousands of years ago in the time of Julius Caesar. Enter along the Via del Fori Imperiali towards the Piazza Venezia side, or from Palatine Hill. The Roman Forum is extensive; find a good guide book so it doesn’t seem like merely piles of stones. The Forum is open only to ticket holders.

Sights in Rome – Part 2

Palatine Hill is one of the most ancient parts of Rome, and one of the seven Hills of Rome, located just above the Roman Forum. Enter south of Colosseum from Via di San Gregorio. The Palatine was originally where the first settlers built their huts. The hill became a residential district for nobility, then later housed imperial palaces. Now it is a large, open-air museum, with only the ruins remaining along with nice views over the Circus Maximus. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy the luxury of space and a break from the crowds.

Vatican City – Visit another country without ever leaving Rome! Vatican City, the smallest country in the world, has much to offer – plan to spend at least one whole day here. Even if you don’t particularly enjoy museums, a visit to the vast labyrinth of the Vatican museum is well worth it. Seeing the original Mona Lisa in person is amazing (no photos allowed). Then head into the Sistine Chapel, the end point of the museum, to experience the stunning Michelangelo ceiling (you’ll never see so many people looking up all at once!). Out of respect, it is asked that you remain quiet and reverent while in the chapel.

An awe-inspiring, architectural masterpiece, St. Peter’s Basilica is the most famous Catholic cathedral in the world and the most prominent building in Vatican City. The cathedral can hold 60,000 people and entry is free for the appropriately dressed (no bare shoulders or knees). Try to be there for the hour-long mass that is performed several times per day. Find out when the Pope conducts prayer (usually on a Sunday or Wednesday if he’s in town), and put it on your itinerary. Notice the Swiss Guard – you’ll spot them from their brightly-colored pantaloons (looking oddly like court jesters). Make sure to send a postcard from inside the city walls – you’ll get a Vatican postmark!

Sights in Rome – Part 3

Walking into the Pantheon is a breathtaking experience. It is an awe-inspiring step back in history. The Pantheon was built around the year 125 AD, and still looks the way it has for thousands of years. The name Pantheon means ‘all the gods,’ reflecting its purpose of worshiping the seven gods of the seven planets of ancient Rome. It is the best preserved Roman structure. Officially, the church’s name is the Church of Mary and the Martyrs, although this name is rarely used. The reason there is an open hole in the center of the domed ceiling (which is called the oculus, or the Great Eye), was to air out smoke from the fires that were burnt in reverence for the gods. This hole is the only light source of the entire structure as well as the air conditioning system. The ground around the Pantheon has risen over the years, making the church look sunken. In addition to being an active Christian church that holds occasional services, this is where the famous painter Rahphael and two of Italy’s kings are buried.

The Spanish Steps and surrounding piazzas are a romantic spot to spend an evening lounging around and enjoying the sights, listening to musicians as they organically spring up, those around them joining in with song. The Spanish Steps, a long and grand staircase, connects the Plazza di Spagna and the Piazza Trinita die Monti. Built in the 1720s, the staircase was meant to connect the Spanish embassy with the Vatican. It is actually against the law to eat while sitting on the steps – you must go to a cafe instead. The fountain at the base of the steps, Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the Old Boat), is adjacent to the house where John Keats died in 1821, which is now the Keats museum. While you are sitting on the steps, keep an eye on your belongings and be aware of pickpockets, which are more plentiful in the evenings. Also be aware that restaurants in the area raise their prices at night.

Sights in Rome – Part 4

Of the many fountains in Rome, the internationally famous Trevi Fountain has been the backdrop of many popular films for decades, making this particular fountain a celebrity in its own right. At 65 feet wide and 85 feet high, the Trevi Fountain is the largest in the whole of Rome (and that’s saying a lot). It was completed in 1762 and designed by Nicola Salvi (along with another designer). The fountain represents the figures of Triton, Poseidon’s son, posed on the right side of Oceanus who is in the middle. Coin throwing is a long-standing tradition at the Trevi Fountain, and in fact one of the main reasons people visit this landmark. Legend has it that if you throw a coin into the fountain with your right hand while facing away from the fountain, you will be ensured a return to Rome. Each night, the coins are collected by city workers (up to 3,000 lira per day!), and the money is then used for charity: a supermarket to serve Rome’s poor, the Italian Red Cross, and other local charities.

Another popular sight in Rome is Piazza Navona, which used to be the site of an ancient Roman circus in the first century AD (explaining the long and skinny shape with rounded corners). In the 15th century this piazza was turned into a city market, which was later moved to another place. The main monuments of this piazza are the large Bernini fountain in the center, called Fontana del Quattro Flumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) and Borromini’s church of Sant’Agnese in Agone. Also, the Pamphilj palace features a gallery by Pietro da Cortona. The other two fountains are at the southern and northern end of the piazza. There are some nice cafes facing the piazza (be prepared to pay top dollar for the location and view), and occasional performances, especially around Christmas-time. Piazza Navona is always open, while the churches and cafes surrounding it are not.

Washington, D.C. is the best possible place to learn about politics and history. All 19 Smithsonian museums offer free entry, including the National Gallery of Art and the National Zoo. Visit the national monuments and tour the White House. Day trips could include Gettysburg, Bull Run, or Mount Vernon.

Northern California – San Francisco and the surrounding areas offer activities for all ages. Have lunch in Fisherman’s Wharf then head to Alcatraz Island for a tour – allow two to three hours for the round-trip boat trip and tour. Plan one day visiting Golden Gate Park and other museums.

Ask anyone who has visited Victoria, and they will tell you that the residents there think they are in Great Britain. Everything is British. A grocery cart is called a buggy and the hood of a car is a bonnet. Take the fifty-five minute ride on the ferry from Port Angeles to the island and walk through downtown Victoria. You may think you crossed the Atlantic to Europe.
The architecture is amazing. The city is designed for the tourist which means you can spend days seeing the wax museum and riding the Double Decker Busses to the other museums. But that isn’t really the reason to go there. Spend the time without frantic “gotta see this” driving you crazy. Walk past the grand hotels, especially The Fairmont Empress. Go inside to actually see the spectacle. There are over 70 hotels and 110 bed and breakfasts. Take the time to have tea British style. If you are from the states, go to a local grocery store and see what they sell. Really! It is a bit different. If you get bored, you can see the art galleries and glass blowing studio, but you probably won’t get bored. Get there the first Sunday in August and see Symphony Splash where the Victoria Symphony plays live on a barge in the middle of the inner harbor. And speaking of the harbor, seeing Victoria at night with its lights reflecting on the water is a wonderful way to walk the city and find a good restaurant.
If you find yourself wanting out of the city for awhile, walk the grounds of the British Columbia Parliament Buildings. Butchart Gardens are a MUST SEE. Live jazz to classical music entertainment is there July through August, but the acres of gardens cannot be explained in words. Google it. Get a taste of the enormity of the place and what it has to offer. That is a full day excursion alone. Victoria and the gardens will fill you with fragrant memories that will draw you there more than once and you may walk away with a British accent!

Fun in the Sun: Venice Beach, Florida

Located in sunny south Florida, Venice is located on the western side of Florida in between Fort Myers and Sarasota, and south of Tampa Bay. This is a beautiful place to spend your vacation, get a tan, and have some serious fun in the sun. Downtown Venice overlooks the Gulf Coast of Mexico and features an abundance of natural beauty plus you can indulge in the lively and interesting art scene. Venice has something to offer both the outdoorsy types as well as those who prefer a laid-back type of vacation. In Venice Beach, you will be able to take advantage of the area’s beautiful white sand beaches, go boating, try your hand at fishing, and be adventurous with many types of water sports. Or, lay in the sun and have cute waiters bring you tropical flavored drinks while you enjoy the beautiful blue ocean. The temperature in Venice is moderate for a nice year-round climate. If you are a golfer, there are several courses to check out – these include the Plantation Golf and Country Club, the Capri Isle Golf Club, the Venice East Golf Club, and the Pelican Pointe Golf & Country Club.

Picture yourself in Venice Beach on vacation. Don’t take any work, your laptop, or anything that could detract from relaxing and enjoying yourself. Get a tan by the private pool of your hotel or vacation rental, have your personal chef make dinner for you and your family or dine in one of the many restaurants in the area. Stroll down to the beach and cozy up next to your sweetheart to watch the sunset together. Some of the nearby towns have much to offer as well. Wander the plentiful shopping malls, noticing that most of the couture designers have their signature stores here (or in nearby Naples). Try not to spend too much of your hard-earned money (it’s easy to do!). If you are single, the nightlife is plentiful – maybe you’ll meet someone to spend the rest of your vacation with!

Leavenworth, Washington is a bit of an enigma. It was born the same year as the Great Northern Railroad and a saw mill was built there in 1903. It was headquarters for the Great Northern Railroad as well, but when those headquarters moved to Wenatchee in the 1920s, it left Leavenworth economically high and dry. In 1962 the city population organized and created a small Bavaria in the middle of the Cascade Range. It is well worth visiting to see the place. Many people from the Seattle/Everett area visit Leavenworth to take in the sights, eat, and shop. It is a regular run for the population west of the mountains.
Leavenworth has a Nutcracker Museum that houses 5,000 of the fellows! It also has a store that sells them and some are as big as you! This store and museum are worth the trip alone. People in Seattle are known to go there just before Christmas to add another nutcracker to their expanding collections. It’s kind of a hidden Seattle obsession to help ignore the rain.
There is Amtrak rail service to Leavenworth Icicle Station. The entire place is designed to be a winter holiday, summer or winter. Cross country runners show up in the summer to run near the golf course and you can see cross country skiers there six months later. Their Oktoberfest is one of the most sought after experiences outside of Germany.
You can pick up a brochure of Leavenworth at the ferry terminals in Seattle that lists page after page of events that happen year round, all Bavarian style. It’s all there: wine tasting rooms, Bavarian restaurants, theaters and arts of all kinds, including hand bell ringers. You can also find hiking, a climbing school, fishing, golf, horseback riding, mountain biking and wild-river rafting based in this Bavarian complex of entertainment. When you stop to think about it, Leavenworth is a little weird, but it’s a good weird. Don’t think about it! Just go there for a bit of fun and wonderful food. Don’t forget to buy a Nutcracker for Christmas.

Maui, the Magic Isle
Often the first place that comes to mind for honeymoon spots is Hawaii. Maui is one of the most beautiful tropical Hawaiian islands, and it is a place for lovers. Enjoy palm-shaded, powdery beaches, warm water, water sports, lush rainforests, world-class resorts, and friendly locals. For the past dozen years, Maui has been voted “Best Island”. 1. Explore beaches: Makena Beach (BIg Beach), D.T. Fleming Beach, Kaanapali Beach (the signature beach of West Maui), and Oneuli Beach, south Maui’s only red sand beach.
2. Haleakala National Park – hike or bike the dormant east Maui seven-mile crater then D=discover the famous Pools of Oheo, which are tiered swimmable waterfall-fed tranquil pools on the lower slopes of Haleakala.
3. The historic whaling village of Lahaina is a hot spot, with art galleries, unique shops, restaurants, and traditional Polynesian dancing.

Las Vegas, Nevada
For a different type of honeymoon (and certainly less expensive), consider the fun and excitement of Las Vegas. Renown for luxury casinos and hotels, a variety of restaurants, all the top shows, and endless nightlife, Vegas has something for everyone.
Activities:
1. The most romantic views in the city is the observation deck of the Stratosphere Tower or the Bellagio fountains from the Eiffel Tower.
2. Dine at Mon Ami Gabi at Paris or try Top of the World or Fleur de Lys for romantic ambiance.
3. Take your sweetheart on a moonlit dinner cruise on the gondolas at the Venitian (champagne and chocolate packages available).
4. Do some dirty dancing at Tao, one of the hottest Vegas nightclubs. Vegas has some amazing shows – check out at least one while you’re there.

This is a good one day excursion or two day stay in Port Angeles. Take the ferry out of Edmonds to Kingston on the peninsula side. You will take 104 over the Hood Canal floating bridge and find 101 west. It’s an easy drive to Port Angles from there.  Port Angeles has a number of hotels and motels. If it’s summer, make reservations ahead. It’s a busy tourist spot. Some of the hotels are on the waterfront with pools and restaurants.  Head out EARLY in the morning. Hurricane Ridge is a popular site. Get directions from locals. Signs also show the way. You will feel like you are driving to a back neighborhood for dinner with friends as you find the road. Once there, the climb is sea level to 5,225 feet. Pay an entry fee of fifteen dollars at the park entrance. The rest of the drive is winding, steep road. Parking is a very long expanse on either side of the road that leads to the visitor’s center.  The upstairs portion of the center has lots of photos on the wall along with the usual history found in state and federal parks. The Mexican town of Bucerias is a charming village with quaint cobblestone streets, friendly locals, and some of the loveliest beaches around. The best coffee shop is Expressions Cafe across from the Hotel Palmeras.

The pretty Mexican resort town of Bucerias offers a variety of outdoor excursions as well as indoor fun. Here are some attractions that you won’t want to miss:
1. Fishing – Banderas Bay is one of Mexico’s largest and deepest bays, making it a great fishing place for sailfish, marlin, tuna, and more. It is also excellent for diving, snorkeling, boating, kayaking, and bay cruises.

The Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, BC regions of the Pacific Northwest are an outcrop of the most beautiful scenery on the planet. Nestled between two mountain ranges with the Strait of Juan De Fuca and the Puget Sound as buffers to extreme climate, the lush green area is unexplainable to people who have never seen it. Beginning in Canada, a drive up the coastline toward Whistler, BC will fill your eyes with some of the most shocking and literally cliff-hanging roads that you have ever witnessed. Lion’s Gate Bridge will take you from Vancouver and into a region that looks devoid of most human life, with the mountains literally dropping straight into the water as you drive on the edge of land and sea. The drive itself is worth the trip. Whistler and Blackcomb? That’s desert! Have some spare change in your pockets. These are the most prestigious resorts in North America. But they are worth the expense if only you get to explore what they offer just once in your life—winter or summer.
Head back across the border and into the U.S. for an island delight. There are a number of jump-off points to the San Juan’s and the Olympic Peninsula. Anacortes is the shortest route to Orcas, San Juan and Lopez Islands. These islands are the main three of an entire collection of smaller ones, with beautiful channels between each. Some of the Washington State Ferries travel these waters slowly enough to make the trip on the ferry alone the sightseeing tour of the weekend.
Further south you will find the small town of Mukilteo with a ferry adjoining Whidbey Island to civilization. South again is the Edmonds-Kingston ferry run to The Olympic Peninsula which by itself can create several summer vacations. Do you like the idea of visiting volcanoes?  Go east into the Cascade Range to find easy access to Mount Baker, Mount Rainier and of course St. Helens, the furthest south of that run of mountains until you hit the Oregon border which is another wonderland worth delivering to your exploratory soul!

One hundred and ninety-four years after its birth, the Black Ball Ferry Line operates one ship between Victoria, British Columbia and Port Angeles, WA. It began as an ocean going fleet running between New York and Liverpool in 1816. After several fall outs with finances, strikes, and arguments with the State of Washington, the line managed to continue as a single ferry.
Unlike the double ended ferries of Washington State, the M.V. Coho is an ocean going vessel that gives you the opportunity to board a ship for a trip of about ninety minutes. That ninety minutes is a beautiful way to see open waters, including experiencing the sight of bow riding porpoise and ocean going Orcas. The Coho is a football field in length and twenty-four yards wide. Refitted with new engines and redesigned passenger amenities such as an enlarged coffee shop and the addition of a solarium, it is a fun trip, especially if you want to get from B.C. to Port Angeles quickly without traffic to press you into memories of freeway commutes. Reservations are much recommended. Be in your car ready to board ninety minutes ahead on the Canadian side and sixty minutes ahead on the U.S. side. This is required for international security checks. Although the ship seems large compared to the Washington State Ferries, the largest of which holds two hundred two cars, the Coho holds one hundred ten cars and a thousand passengers. So plan ahead. The planning will make the trip worry free and a lot more fun.
Once underway, you will get the feel of being ocean going. Well, almost. And you get the thrill of seeing the flags changed from U.S. to Canadian or visa-versa as you cross the official border between the two countries! All of that aside, on a clear day with the wind in your face and the sun on your head, the real thrill is watching the occasional schools of porpoise playing with the wake of the ship. That alone is worth the trip that momentarily removes any memory of traffic on I-5!

OK. Now you’ve made it to Kingston. It’s a tiny town. A hand full of restaurants, coffee, ice cream and curio shops. One of the coffee shops roasts its own brand of coffee. If you like coffee, get a one pound bag. You won’t regret it. But that’s not a requirement for the trip. It’s a perk. Forgive the pun.
