While in most cases, traveling abroad is a safe experience, anyone who is preparing to take a trip overseas must understand the security threats that exist and take active steps to protect themselves from possible problems. Understanding what to bring with you, what NOT to bring with you, and some helpful tips and tricks will make every trip abroad as safe as possible.

What To Take

Remember that what you bring with you can be considered likeability while you travel. Expensive clothing and large amounts of luggage may make you a target, so travel as light as possible. Be sure to have required documentation with you. It is also a good to bring along a complete list of your medications, including any generic names in case of a medical emergency.

What Not To Take

Only bring along the documentation you need. Remove extra piece of identification such as library or gym cards from your wallet. Likewise, leave expensive or irreplaceable jewelery at home. Select one or tow credit cards to bring on the trip and leave any additional cards at home.

Other Tips and Tricks

Be sure to leave a complete itinerary with friends or family in case of an emergency. The State Department offers a great service – The Smart Traveler Program. It is free, available online and lets you check in on each leg of your trip. Finally, remember to take the time to study the laws and customs for each country you plan to travel to. You will be subject to the laws of the countries you visit and ignorance of a law will not excuse you.

Traveling can be a fun experience for the family; visiting a particular destination that enacts excitement and enjoyment for everyone involved. However, traveling can be just as hectic as it can be enjoyable. Whether driving to a specific place, or making an long plane trip, there are a number of items that consistently arise as concerns for potential travelers that should not be overlooked.

The unfortunate fact remains that when people are traveling and in a place they are not native to, they are more susceptible to danger; this is particularly prevalent for travelers in foreign places. Below is a list of some things travelers can do to make themselves more safe on a vacation.

Research the Destination

One of the most obvious ways to ensure you will be safe in a particular destination is to research that destination prior to deciding to visit. This concept applies more so to overseas travel than local, but is still important nonetheless. Going this route ensures there are not any cultural or local issues that might cause an increase in aggression towards tourists.

Map Out the Trip

Have a set plan prior to making the trip. This helps ensure that you stay organized and structured when you get to your destination. Having everything planned out prior also reduces the chance that you or your fellow travelers will get lost.

Stay Together

Staying together is something that is extremely important; particularly for families traveling in foreign countries. By sticking together and remaining in a group, the chances of anything happening to any single individual is drastically reduced.

 

Tips for Women Traveling Alone

As more and more women have entered the workforce, there has also been an increased need for them to travel. There are now many women CEO’s and business officials that need to travel frequently as part of their job. Safety should be the number one priority for the woman who is flying alone especially in parts of the world that may not hold a woman’s independence in high standing. The following are some areas to consider for the woman who  fly solo:

1. Check out Your Surroundings-Take a quick mental check of your surrounding area or the area you will be walking through in order to avoid any unfavorable situations that can await you.

2. Research where you will Stay-Always research the hotel and area you will be staying in on your traveling trip. If it is in a bad area then you may need to look elsewhere.

3. Respect the Culture-There are countries where wearing short or revealing clothing is offensive so you may want to dress modestly while there.

4. Carry Safety Devices-It is usually safe to bring a whistle with you where ever you go and it just may give you the extra time needed for safety to arrive if you find yourself in a dangerous situation. If you plan to bring additional safety devices, always make sure you can board a plane or take it with you to your destination.

5. Personal Hygiene Products-You may want to take feminine products with you that will last the entire trip as they may be quite expensive if you plan to travel abroad.
