If you’re disabled, you might think that you have to stay home and you really can’t travel. Generally, though, that’s not the case. There are plenty of places that can accommodate a person with a disability. Before you head out on your adventure, though, you’ll want to do some research. Just taking a spontaneous trip may be more difficult for you, and it’s better to take the time to plan things out, so you don’t have to worry about where you’ll stay, where you’ll eat, and if you’ll be able to get help if you need it.
Even if logistics are a little bit more difficult in your case, that shouldn’t stop you. First, decide where you’d like to go and how you’re going to get there. If you can fly or drive without assistance, things will be easier. If you can’t, talk to the company that you’re considering flying with, or the bus or train company if you’re traveling that way. Make sure that they can accommodate you, and ask about additional costs and other factors. Make sure you cover all bases, including any medications or treatments you’ll need, food, the bathroom, and any other issues where you may have a special need.
Once you’ve covered how you’ll get there, it’s important to figure out where you’re going to stay and how you’ll get a chance to see the sites. If there is disability transportation in the city you’ll be visiting, find out about it in relation to tourist attractions and restaurants. Call hotels in the destination city, too. Ask about disability rooms and what they have to offer. Make sure that your accommodations can truly accommodate you. Obviously, it can be easier to travel with someone to help you, but don’t let a lack of a helper stop you from fulfilling your travel dreams.
