The current state of the economy has forced many people to reconsider their traditional vacation plans. In earlier years, families may have chosen to take a short cruise or travel out of the country, but today, more families are traveling within the United States in an attempt to save money. You can still enjoy a fun and relaxing vacation with few simple tips and tricks.

  1. Try vacation rentals – instead of booking several expensive hotel rooms, consider renting a home or condo for your trip. You will save money not only on the rental cost, but a vacation rental will give you access to a kitchen and laundry facilities – two great ways to save money.
  2. Chamber of Commerce – consider placing a call to the local Chamber of Commerce prior to booking your trip. They can give you information about local attractions and coming events. Use the information to plan inexpensive activities during your trip.
  3. Turn the cell phones off – for some reason, those taking short vacations often treat them more like working vacations. Turn off your cell phone and leave the lap top at home. Remember your vacation are fun and relaxing – not extra work time!
  4. Bring your own entertainment – be sure to pack plenty of games, books, and magazines for the kids. A big expense during vacations is always the ‘extras.’ Bringing along a few new games or toys will cost a lot less than the expensive tourist swag found in many vacation towns.
